Fun-Filled Recreational Gymnastics Programme

British Gymnastics launched an exciting new project called Rise, a fun and engaging programme designed to guide gymnasts on a progressive journey through recreational gymnastics. This award scheme is divided into three phases: Discover, Explore, and Excel. These phases help gymnasts build their skills, starting from their very first steps in gymnastics to mastering advanced techniques.

I was commissioned to design a range of characters for the Discover phase, specifically aimed at preschool-aged children. These characters were illustrated performing various movements using specific gymnastic equipment. The illustrations were featured on coaching cards to demonstrate proper technique for each skill. To make learning fun, the skills were presented as imaginative scenarios where children could picture themselves as Dinosaurs, Jungle Explorers, or Scuba Divers.

The project included over 15 themed scenarios, each accompanied by a poster showcasing the movements within the appropriate environment, such as a Jungle, Zoo, Space, Playground, or Under the Sea.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was illustrating the characters in precise gymnastic poses. I collaborated closely with a gymnastics coach to ensure accuracy, paying careful attention to the positioning of legs, arms, feet, and hands. The most enjoyable part of the project was assembling the illustrations into vibrant posters that brought the themes to life.

This project not only made gymnastics more accessible for young learners but also added a sense of adventure and creativity to their training journey.
